A Flag For Dumfriesshire

dumfriesshire

This rather striking flag proposal for the county of Dumfriesshire is the creation of Philip Tibbetts. It features a red saltire on gold as found in the arms of the Bruce family,

bruce

traditional Lords of Annandale, a historic district lying within the county, centered upon the River Annan. Charged over the red saltire is a black one, taken from the arms of the former county council

which itself comes from the arms of the Earl of Nithsdale,

nithsdale

another local region, centered on the River Nith. The golden hedgehog derives from

another coat of arms associated with the dynasty that supplied the Lords of Nithsdale and can be see as a symbol of defence. The flag can be purchased here.Dumfriesshire.gif
