Rutland Day is held on September 13th, “Grand Assault of Gibraltar Day”

. The 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot

was a British Army line infantry regiment, raised in 1755. In 1770 it began a fourteen year spell in Gibraltar, which included the “Great Siege”. On 13th September 1782, the allied Spanish and French armies launched a Grand Assault on the British colony with 5,190 fighting men. The ensuing siege lasted three years and seven months, the longest siege endured by British Armed forces. For its services there the regiment was granted Gibraltar’s insignia as its cap badge and in August 1782 it adopted a county designation as the 58th Rutlandshire Regiment of Foot. In token of the date on which the assault on Gibraltar began and the regiment’s subsequent linkage with the county of Rutland, this date was selected as the Rutland County Day.

Thousands of people head to the shores of Rutland Water annually at an event hosted by Anglian Water, which showcases the best of Rutland’s produce with the Food and Drink Festival, including over 20 different stalls and producers.
