A Flag For Inverness-shire

This proposal, the creation of Philip Tibbetts, takes its colours from the coat of arms of Inverness-shire County Council

The crossed devices are Lochaber Axes as found in the arms of Lochaber District Council in the county

which themselves derive from the civic arms of the town of Fort William

where they commemorate the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645 between the Marquess of Montrose and the Campbells. This form of axe is a famed Highland weapon. The large triangle at the hoist and extending to the fly end of the flag, represents the large and iconic “Great Glen” that runs through the county, dividing it in two.
