This proposal from Brady Ells incorporates the theme of Philip Tibbetts’s proposed flag for the Lothian region as a whole, the local blazing sun emblem against the local maroon colour. The design of the flag is further inspired by the three suns which appear on the arms of Midlothian County Council
The juxtaposition of the large central sun on the flag represents Midlothian between the other two counties in the Lothian region.
A sun also featured in the arms of Lothian Regional Council
The proposed use of a common charge, the blazing sun, on the flag of a constituent part of Lothian, mirrors the deployment of the Yorkshire rose which appears on the county’s flag as well as on all three riding flags, north, west and east.
