A Flag For North Uist

Following the adoption of flags for fellow Hebridean islands Barra and South Uist, a competition has been announced to select one for North Uist.

which had been promoted as a potential flag for the island before the competition was established, is explored further here.

This proposed North Uist flag is based upon South Uist’s flag, to highlight the relationship of the two islands but with the colours reversed to demonstrate the distinction of each. A white, five pointed star, in the first canton is incorporated from an earlier concept for a North Uist flag

featuring a white star offset to the hoist, on a blue field.

The theme of the Nordic cross is prevalent in the region, reflecting the area’s inclusion in the mediaeval Scandinavian Kingdom of the Isles. A flag representing the entire Outer Hebrides (Western Isles) archipelago also exists.
